Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former president of the Spanish football federation, had eggs thrown at him during the launch of his new book in Madrid on Thursday. The 48-year-old, recently convicted of sexual assault for forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso, was struck on the back by an egg allegedly thrown by his uncle.
Rubiales told news portal Periodista Digital that the attacker was his uncle, Luis Ruben, whom he described as a 'deranged person'. He said he initially thought the man was armed. National police confirmed the arrest of a Spanish man but did not verify the family relationship.
The incident occurred at the presentation of Rubiales' book 'Matar a Rubiales' (Killing Rubiales). He attempted to chase his uncle but was restrained by others. Earlier this week, Rubiales claimed on Spanish television that he was a victim of a 'sudden far-left movement' that created a 'parallel reality' around the kiss scandal.
Rubiales was fined €10,800 (£9,550) for the non-consensual kiss during the Women's World Cup medal ceremony in August 2023. He maintains the kiss was consensual and plans to appeal the conviction. The case sparked global outrage, leading to his resignation and a three-year ban from football.
