Ruben Amorim has definitively ruled out a return to management in Portugal, instead confirming his intention to continue his career abroad. The former Manchester United manager had been linked with replacing Jose Mourinho at Benfica, who is reportedly set to take charge of Real Madrid. However, Amorim's representatives have issued a statement quashing such speculation.
Amorim endured a turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford before being sacked in January. Since his departure, Manchester United have improved under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who is now expected to be appointed permanently. The 41-year-old Portuguese coach made his name at Sporting CP before moving to England.
Despite close ties to Benfica – he is a close friend of president Rui Costa and previously played for the club – Amorim has no desire to return to the Estádio da Luz. His agency, AS1 Sports, stated: 'Ruben Amorim made the decision a long time ago to pursue his career abroad. He has not had any meetings with Portuguese clubs.'
With Amorim out of the running, reports suggest Fulham boss Marco Silva has reached an 'agreement in principle' to take over at Benfica. Silva, who has been at Craven Cottage since 2021, has not ruled out a return to his homeland. He recently said: 'I've never closed any doors to anything... the future is open.'
