Manchester United legend Roy Keane has been warned that he may find it difficult to offer meaningful advice to his future son-in-law, Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, according to Saints icon Shane Long. The 24-year-old centre-back is preparing to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, and Long believes Keane's extraordinary natural talent could create a disconnect.
Keane's Natural Ability a Barrier?
Speaking to Goal, Long explained: "It's hard though. It was so natural to Roy, the way he played football. I remember he was over with the Ireland team and telling us how to pass the ball and just couldn't understand that we couldn't do what he could do." Long added that Keane will be honest with Harwood-Bellis, but noted that the defender has had to work hard to reach this stage, having gone on loan to Burnley before establishing himself at Southampton.
Harwood-Bellis's Journey
Harwood-Bellis, who captained Southampton in their shock 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the previous round, began his career at Manchester City, making eight first-team appearances. He earned his sole England cap against the Republic of Ireland in 2024, scoring on debut with Keane watching as a pundit. The defender is engaged to Keane's daughter Leah, and the couple welcomed their daughter in December 2025.
Despite Keane's fearsome reputation, he showed a softer side when discussing Harwood-Bellis's England debut, saying on ITV Sport: "He's got a goal threat in him. It's nice for him. He's a nice kid, his family's done a good job." Harwood-Bellis himself has sought Keane's advice, telling Sky Sports: "There's no better person to ask in terms of big moments with the experiences he's gone through."
Southampton's FA Cup Ambitions
The Championship side arrive at Wembley on a 20-match unbeaten run, with promotion also in their sights. They face a formidable Manchester City side who have already won the Carabao Cup and sit top of the Premier League. Southampton last reached the FA Cup final in 2003 and won the competition once, in 1976 against Manchester United.
Fans can watch the FA Cup semi-final live on TNT Sports, which is available via a monthly subscription on the Prime Video channel.
