Rooney: Rosenior Won't Disappoint as Chelsea Manager

Wayne Rooney has backed Liam Rosenior to succeed as Chelsea manager, calling him 'as good a coach as he's ever worked with'. Rosenior is set to leave Strasbourg to take over at Stamford Bridge, replacing Enzo Maresca who departed on New Year's Day.

Rosenior, 41, will make his Premier League managerial debut after impressing at Strasbourg, where he won 49 per cent of his 63 games. Both clubs are owned by BlueCo, giving him prior experience with the hierarchy.

Rooney, who worked with Rosenior at Derby County from 2021 to 2022, praised his former assistant's coaching ability. 'His detail, how he approaches the day-to-day, he's as good as I've worked with,' Rooney said on the Wayne Rooney Show.

Rosenior's coaching career began at Brighton's under-23 side before moving to Derby as first team coach. He later managed Hull City, leading them to seventh in the Championship before being sacked. He joined Strasbourg in July 2024.

Rooney added that Rosenior has an edge to his personality and is ready for the opportunity. 'If he goes in there, he won't disappoint,' Rooney said. 'For young English coaches, it's massive.'
