Ronaldo Breaks Euro Goals Record in Portugal's Late Win Over Hungary

Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time leading goalscorer in European Championship history as Portugal scored three late goals to secure a 3-0 victory over Hungary in their Euro 2020 opener. The match, played in front of over 60,000 fans in Budapest, was the biggest crowd at a European football match since the start of the pandemic.

Portugal dominated possession but struggled to break down a resilient Hungary side until the 84th minute, when Raphael Guerreiro's deflected shot put them ahead. Ronaldo then converted a penalty in the 87th minute to score his 10th goal in the competition, surpassing Michel Platini's record of nine. He added an 11th goal in injury time to seal the win.

The 36-year-old now has 106 goals in 176 appearances for Portugal, leaving him just four goals shy of the all-time international scoring record. Ronaldo had earlier missed a clear chance in the first half, volleying wide from six yards, but made amends with his late double.

Hungary thought they had taken the lead in the second half through substitute Szabolcs Schon, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Portugal, who face Germany and France next in the 'group of death', needed the win to kickstart their title defence.
