Cristian Romero has been appointed as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur following Son Heung-min's departure from the club. Son, who led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with victory in the Europa League last season, has joined LAFC after a decade in London.
Centre-back Romero, 27, had been linked with a move away earlier in the transfer window but has remained at the club. Manager Thomas Frank confirmed the decision, praising the Argentina international's leadership qualities. "He was very honoured and very happy about it," Frank said ahead of the Uefa Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Frank emphasised the importance of a leadership group, stating: "I want a leadership group as well. Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible." He plans to name the group after the transfer window closes.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and has been a regular starter when fit. He served as deputy captain to Son last season alongside James Maddison, who will miss much of the upcoming campaign due to a serious knee injury. Spurs begin their Premier League season at home to promoted Burnley on Saturday.
