Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been handed an £80,000 fine and a formal warning regarding his future conduct after making critical comments about match officials. The Spain international faced a charge from the Football Association on 13 February, nearly two weeks after City's 2-2 draw with Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 1 February.
Independent Commission Decision
Rodri admitted the charge, and an independent commission subsequently imposed the financial penalty while issuing the warning. The commission's written reasons confirmed a unanimous decision against imposing any sporting sanction, such as a playing ban. Notably, the Football Association had not sought such a punishment in its initial submission to the commission.
The Controversial Comments
Rodri's rant came in an interview with Australian broadcaster Stan Sport, where he publicly stated that referees "have to be neutral." The midfielder expressed frustration after believing Manchester City should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Marc Guehi by Dominic Solanke in the build-up to Tottenham's first goal.
Rodri said: "I know we won too much and the people don't want us to win but the referee has to be neutral and for me honestly, it's not fair. It's not fair because we work so hard in these situations and now to make these decisions, we have to move on. Of course you need to come back but at the end, when everything is finished, we are frustrated because it's so clear, the foul."
Title Run-In Implications
Rodri avoiding a playing ban means he is set to be available for Manchester City's crucial Premier League title run-in as they attempt to chase down leaders Arsenal. Pep Guardiola's side currently sit seven points behind the Gunners, though they do have a game in hand over their rivals.
Upcoming Fixtures
The two title contenders are scheduled to meet in the Carabao Cup final on 22 March, before clashing again in what promises to be a pivotal league match at the Etihad Stadium on 19 April. Rodri's availability could prove significant in these high-stakes encounters as Manchester City seek to close the gap at the top of the table.
