Liverpool Confirm Andy Robertson's Summer Departure Following Mohamed Salah
Liverpool Football Club has officially announced that defender Andy Robertson will leave Anfield at the conclusion of the current season, following in the footsteps of forward Mohamed Salah. The Scottish captain's exit marks the end of a nine-year tenure with the Reds, confirmed in a club statement released on Thursday.
Robertson's Legacy as a Liverpool Legend
In their statement, Liverpool hailed Robertson as a "genuine Liverpool legend" who played a "fundamental role" in the club's recent successes. Since his signing from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has made 373 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield.
The 32-year-old left-back addressed his departure publicly, stating: "I think I feel better now that it's out in the open. The hardest bit in the last couple of weeks and months is some people that are close to me in the training ground don't know and, more importantly, the fans."
Robertson emphasized his focus on the remainder of the season, saying: "I just think it's better being out in the open, that now I can fully focus on the team from now until the end of the season. I think it's important that I do that."
Emotional Tributes Between Teammates
Following the announcement, Mohamed Salah took to Instagram to honor his long-time teammate, posting a carousel of photos showing the pair together on and off the pitch. The Egyptian forward wrote: "With these pictures showing the bond we shared, I almost felt I could get away with saying nothing about you leaving. It's been an honour to be your teammate and your friend. You've won it all and you leave as a legend. I'm sure we will meet again."
Robertson responded warmly to Salah's tribute, replying: "Been a hell of a journey my friend," accompanied by a heart emoji. The exchange highlighted the strong bond between two of Liverpool's most influential players over the past nine seasons.
Challenges Ahead for Manager Arne Slot
The simultaneous departures of Robertson and Salah present significant challenges for Liverpool manager Arne Slot as he plans for the upcoming season. Both players have been cornerstone figures in Liverpool's success, with their experience and leadership qualities leaving substantial voids to fill.
Slot's immediate focus, however, remains on securing the strongest possible finish to the current campaign. Liverpool suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, leaving their semi-final prospects uncertain heading into the second leg at Anfield.
In the Premier League, Liverpool currently occupy fifth position with just seven matches remaining. Their next fixture sees them host Fulham at Anfield on Saturday with a late 5:30 PM kick-off time.
Robertson's Reflections on His Liverpool Journey
The Scotland international reflected on the difficulty of keeping his departure secret, particularly from the club's supporters. "The closer it gets, the more and more questions you start to get," Robertson explained. "I've always said that the fans are the most important people at this club and I just think now is the time to tell them what's going on."
While acknowledging that emotional farewells would come later, Robertson stated: "The time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans and the people connected to this club what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet. It's just to try to get it out there so I can now be open and honest with everyone."
Liverpool's statement concluded by noting that celebration of Robertson's legacy would be postponed until season's end, with the defender "fully focused on helping the Reds end 2025-26 as successfully as possible."
