Robbie Savage's son Charlie has signed his first professional contract with Nottingham Forest, marking a significant milestone in the young footballer's career. The 17-year-old, who turns 18 next month, follows in his father's footsteps after the former Wales international enjoyed a successful playing career.
Robbie Savage expressed his pride in an emotional open letter to his son, reflecting on the journey and the challenges ahead. He wrote: 'It's hard to convey a father's emotions in the spoken word, so I've written down how it feels. This is my letter to Charlie. It's not Shakespeare, but it's from the heart and it tells the world how proud I am of his achievement.'
The letter, reminiscent of one Savage received from his own father when he joined Manchester United's Class of '92, offers advice and encouragement. Savage urged his son to stay true to himself, embrace mistakes, and never let others define his worth. He wrote: 'Remember success never comes easy and on the journey you will make mistakes... but always keep in mind that it is not about how many times you fall down – it's about how many times you get up after falling.'
Savage also addressed the potential pressures of being his son, acknowledging the media spotlight but encouraging Charlie to forge his own path. 'My wish is not for you to follow in my path; it is for you to make your own path and be even better than me,' he wrote.
