Chelsea captain Reece James has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a six-year contract extension that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. The new deal, which builds on his previous contract that was set to expire in 2028, ensures the England international will remain with the Blues for the remainder of his peak years.
“I am over the moon to have extended my contract - Chelsea means so much to me,” James told the club’s official website. “I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.”
Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart expressed their delight, saying: “On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract.” Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior added: “I can't stop smiling because we've secured the best footballer in the world in his position. For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step.”
James, an academy graduate, has made 225 appearances for Chelsea since his debut in 2019 and was appointed captain in 2023 following Cesar Azpilicueta's departure. The right-back, who has also played in defensive midfield, has overcome persistent hamstring and knee problems that caused him to miss 114 matches since the start of the 2021/22 season. After undergoing hamstring surgery in December 2023, he has managed 35 appearances so far this season, his highest tally since 2021/22.
The 25-year-old is a Champions League winner with Chelsea, having helped the club to European glory in 2021, and last year lifted the Club World Cup and Conference League while wearing the captain's armband. His new deal runs until he turns 32, underlining the club's faith in his ability to remain at the top level.
