Real Madrid have issued a statement apologising for an error in a tribute video shown at the club's ordinary general assembly. The video was intended to honour Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident in July, but mistakenly featured an image of Elche player Andre da Silva instead of Andre Silva.
The club's statement on X read: 'Real Madrid C.F. apologises to Elche C.F. and its player André da Silva for having mistakenly included his image in the obituary of an institutional video instead of that of André Silva, the brother of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player. We regret this incident.'
Andre da Silva, who plays for Elche, previously played alongside Diogo Jota at Porto and for the Portuguese national team. The tribute was shown ahead of Real Madrid's game, with former Liverpool player Trent Alexander-Arnold, manager Xabi Alonso, and other club figures present.
Since the tragedy, Liverpool have retired Jota's number 20 shirt and held memorials. Alexander-Arnold left a floral tribute with a handwritten message: 'My mate Diogo, you are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre's memory will always live on.'
In Jota's hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, the community has honoured his legacy. The local club's academy was renamed after him in 2022, and a mural with the quote 'It's not important where we come from but where we're going' commemorates his journey from the small town to Premier League stardom.
