Arthur Jones, Super Bowl Champion with Ravens, Dies at 39

Arthur Jones, a defensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, has died at the age of 39. His alma mater, Syracuse University, announced his death on Friday, though no cause was given.

Jones was selected by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and played four seasons in Baltimore. He recorded 8.5 of his 10 career sacks during the 2012-13 seasons, helping the Ravens defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. In that game, he sacked quarterback Colin Kaepernick just before a power outage at the Superdome and also recovered a fumble.

After his time in Baltimore, Jones played two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and a final season with the Washington Commanders in 2017. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta paid tribute, saying: 'Arthur's presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others.'

At Syracuse, Jones set a school record for an interior defensive lineman with 38.5 tackles for loss and was a first-team All-Big East selection in his final two seasons. He was the older brother of former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former NFL defensive end Chandler Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.

Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack remembered Jones as 'a tremendous player and even better person,' adding: 'We were fortunate that Arthur continued to support our football program after his playing career. He impacted many of our student-athletes, always with a smile and uplifting message.'
