Barcelona's preparations for their highly anticipated return to Camp Nou have been dealt a significant blow, with on-loan star Marcus Rashford now a major doubt for Saturday's La Liga fixture against Athletic Club.
Training Ground Absence Raises Alarm
The England international was forced to miss training for the second consecutive day on Friday due to illness. Reports from Spain, including those from Mundo Deportivo, indicate the 28-year-old is battling a 'severe cold' and fever.
Rashford, who had just returned from international duty, attempted to rejoin the squad at the Ciutat Esportiva training ground on Friday morning. However, he was sent home shortly after 9am as he was still displaying symptoms of the illness.
Flick Confirms Serious Concerns
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick addressed the situation directly in his press conference, casting serious doubt on the winger's availability. "Marcus has a fever and was out yesterday and today, and I have doubts about whether he'll be available tomorrow," Flick stated.
The potential absence is a substantial setback for both player and team. Rashford has been an ever-present figure this season, being one of only two Barcelona players to have featured in every game. His potential unavailability is particularly poorly timed, coinciding with the club's first match at the iconic Camp Nou stadium in over two years.
Form and Future Fixtures
Rashford's loan spell from Manchester United has been remarkably successful thus far. The forward has been in scintillating form, contributing six goals and nine assists in just 16 appearances across all competitions.
His standout performances include scoring two goals in each of the Champions League matches against Newcastle and Olympiacos, as well as providing an assist in last month's 2-1 El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid.
There is some positive news for Flick, with several players including Raphinha and Lamine Yamal returning to fitness. However, midfield star Pedri remains a doubt after training separately all week.
All eyes will now be on the club's medical update, expected on Friday. Rashford will be desperate to recover in time for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, followed by crucial Liga matches against Alaves and title rivals Atletico Madrid.
