Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday to secure third place in the Premier League, with Bruno Fernandes equalling the all-time single-season assist record. The Portuguese playmaker provided his 20th assist of the campaign, matching Thierry Henry's record set in 2002-03.
The victory was not without controversy, as United's second goal saw Bryan Mbeumo control the ball with his arm before setting up Matheus Cunha. Despite protests from Forest players, the goal stood. Morgan Gibbs-White scored a stunning improvised finish for Forest, making it 3-2, but United held on through eight minutes of added time.
Fernandes, who also scored in the match, said: 'Everyone knew that the assist record was important. I'm very happy, but more than that, I'm happy for the win. I want collective awards more than anything.' He added: 'I got to 20 today. Let's see if I do in the final game.'
Forest had chances to equalise late on, with United goalkeeper Lammens making several saves. Casemiro received a standing ovation as he left the pitch for what is expected to be his final home game for the club. Joshua Zirkzee, who replaced Mbeumo, was twice denied by Forest goalkeeper Sels in stoppage time.
The win means United finish third, while Forest remain in the relegation zone. Gibbs-White's goal was his 14th of the season, the most of any English player, with only one being a penalty.
