Premier League hires top barrister for Man City case

The Premier League has strengthened its legal team with top-tier counsel as its dispute with Manchester City over alleged financial breaches continues. Elite law firm Slaughter and May and prominent King's Counsel Sir James Eadie have joined the league's legal roster alongside Bird & Bird, according to reports from the Lawyer.

Legal Team Expansion

Both Eadie and Slaughter and May have reportedly been advising the Premier League for several months as proceedings intensified. The escalation reflects the unprecedented scale and importance of the battle.

Sir James Eadie KC leads all advocates in UK Supreme Court appearances over the past decade, closely followed by Lord Pannick KC, who represents Manchester City. Eadie also serves as the 'Treasury Devil', an elite legal office dating back centuries that represents the Crown in major civil disputes.

Independent Regulatory Oversight

Independent regulatory oversight has raised the stakes for Manchester City's future. The head of the Independent Football Regulator, David Kogan, confirmed the body holds statutory powers to evaluate club leadership and could potentially force a sale if adverse financial findings are upheld.

Kogan has drawn a firm boundary against government influence. In response to political remarks concerning UAE investment in Manchester, he pledged to resign immediately if subjected to political pressure regarding City's case.

Core Dispute and Appeals

At the core of the dispute are historic allegations of disguised funding. An independent commission determined that Manchester City breached financial rules between 2009 and 2018 through an alleged £830m scheme to artificially inflate commercial deals.

Manchester City continue to contest the findings through the appeals process. The club maintains its innocence and has appealed the ruling, while wider concerns persist over how the dispute could affect UAE investment in the UK.
