Departing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has set his sights on a new challenge, expressing a strong desire to take charge of a national team. The 55-year-old confirmed on Friday that he will step down from the Citizens after a decade at the helm, sparking intense speculation about his next move.
Guardiola's Ambition for International Management
As one of the finest managers in football history, Guardiola's future has been a topic of widespread conjecture. In 2024, as he entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, reports emerged suggesting he was contemplating a role with a national side. Speaking to ESPN Brasil in February 2024, Guardiola openly acknowledged his aspiration to lead a country at a major international competition.
He stated: "A national team. I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I would like that. I don't know who would want me! To work for a national team they have to want you, just like a club."
At the time, Guardiola silenced those rumours by signing a two-year contract extension with City in November 2024. Now that he is available, he could finally fulfil his long-held ambition.
Potential Destinations
While this summer's World Cup has arrived too early for Guardiola to take the reins, most national associations would surely leap at the opportunity to appoint a manager of his calibre should a vacancy arise. According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Guardiola has shown interest in taking charge of Italy. The four-time world champions are desperately in need of elite leadership after failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Guardiola was also linked with the Brazil position while on sabbatical in 2012. However, a lengthy wait would be required for the former Barcelona manager, with ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti tied to the five-time world champions until 2030.
Guardiola and Spain might seem like an obvious match. But Luis de la Fuente, who has occupied the role since 2022, guided La Roja to European Championship triumph in 2024 and will back himself at the World Cup this summer.
Regarding England, Guardiola was linked with the position before penning a contract extension with City in 2024 and before Thomas Tuchel was appointed to replace Gareth Southgate. Nevertheless, the forthcoming World Cup would need to be disastrous for Tuchel, who is contracted until 2028, for the FA to reassess the German's standing with the Three Lions.
Guardiola's Legacy at Manchester City
Guardiola departs City as the most decorated manager in the club's history, claiming 20 major honours since arriving in July 2016. The 55-year-old secured six Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2023, three FA Cups, and five League Cups. The former Bayern Munich chief will maintain his ties with the Blues, however, by stepping into the role of Global Ambassador for City Football Group.
In a statement confirming his exit, he said: "Don't ask me the reasons I'm leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it's my time. Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City."
