Nottingham Forest were left incensed after a penalty awarded to them was overturned by VAR during their FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Referee Peter Bankes initially pointed to the spot after Kaoru Mitoma was adjudged to have brought down Elliot Anderson, but following a lengthy review, Bankes reversed his decision.
The Forest bench reacted furiously, with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa confronting fourth official Thomas Bramall. Barbosa appeared to gesture that Forest should have been awarded two penalties. BBC Sport commentator Steve Wilson described the bench as 'absolutely delirious'.
Co-commentator Matthew Upson, however, agreed with the reversal, noting that replays showed Anderson appeared to plant his foot on Mitoma's elbow. The incident was a rare flashpoint in a goalless affair that saw only one shot on target from Brighton and Forest lacking the firepower of injured striker Chris Wood.
After 100 minutes without a goal, the match went to extra-time. Brighton made a late substitution, bringing on Lewis Dunk for Adam Webster after an injury to Georginio Rutter. The tie will now be decided in a replay.
