Crystal Palace advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Millwall at Selhurst Park, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Chris Richards put Palace ahead in the 72nd minute, but Ryan Leonard equalised in added time to force penalties.
Jean-Philippe Mateta missed a late chance to win the game from six yards out, but debutant goalkeeper Walter Benitez proved the hero in the shootout. Benitez saved efforts from Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu, while Steven Benda, a late replacement for injured Max Crocombe, could not stop any of Palace's penalties.
Palace dominated early proceedings, with Yeremy Pino forcing a save from Benda. The hosts were frustrated by a series of physical tackles, but Millwall almost took the lead in the 32nd minute when Camiel Neghli shot wide. The visitors improved, with Mihailo Ivanovic and Zac Sturge testing Benitez before half-time.
After the break, Palace resumed control, peppering the Millwall box with crosses. The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Christantus Uche's shot from a corner led to a scramble that Richards converted. However, Millwall levelled in stoppage time through Leonard's glancing header from a corner.
Mateta then missed a golden opportunity to win it, firing wide from Daniel Munoz's setup, but Palace held their nerve in the shootout to secure victory.
