Michael Owen Delivers Blunt Warning to Manchester United Hierarchy
Former England striker Michael Owen has issued a dramatic warning to the Manchester United hierarchy, stating they would be "lynched" by supporters if they dismiss interim manager Michael Carrick and his replacement subsequently fails at Old Trafford. The stark comments come as Carrick continues to build a compelling case for the permanent managerial position.
Carrick's Impressive Interim Record
Since taking temporary charge in January following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, Michael Carrick has overseen a remarkable transformation at Manchester United. The former midfielder has guided the team to seven victories and two draws from his first ten matches in charge, propelling United back into contention for a Champions League qualification spot.
Owen expressed genuine bewilderment that some Manchester United legends, including Roy Keane and Gary Neville, have expressed reservations about Carrick securing the permanent role. "I'm astounded by certain people saying no, they shouldn't appoint him," Owen declared. "Why on earth is this even a question? I don't get it."
A Dozen Years of Managerial Turmoil
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward highlighted the club's extensive search for stability since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. "They've tried everything: proven managers like Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho, they've given ex-players like Ole Gunnar Solskjær opportunities, and they've experimented with left-field appointments like Ralf Rangnick," Owen explained.
He continued with pointed emphasis: "After a dozen years of trying and failing, you land on somebody who's getting a tune out of the players. They're winning games, looking progressive, and some players are performing at their best levels in years. How can anybody say he shouldn't continue?"
The Statistical Case for Continuity
Owen presented compelling statistical evidence to support his argument. "If the Premier League season had started when Carrick took over, Manchester United would currently be top of the table," he revealed. "We're approximately one-third through that hypothetical season, and United would be leading. You'd be asking whether they could win the title."
The former striker offered pragmatic contract advice to the club's new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the executive team. "What's the worst that can happen? You give him a two-year contract. If he starts next season poorly, you part ways. It's not like you're committing to someone for a decade."
Squad Assessment and Future Considerations
While endorsing Carrick's managerial credentials, Owen offered a more measured assessment of striker Benjamin Sesko's long-term prospects. The Slovenian forward has scored eight goals in his last eleven appearances, including three under previous caretaker Darren Fletcher.
"To me, he's not the answer long-term," Owen stated regarding the £73.7 million summer signing. "He's an expensive player who can improve and be a valuable squad member, but if United want to challenge for titles, I don't think he's the centre-forward you build your hopes around."
Owen concluded with balanced perspective: "He's improved them, regained confidence, and become an asset. But there's still considerable progress required if Manchester United aspire to reclaim their former dominance in English football."
