In what should have been the perfect start to married life, NRL star Ryan Matterson and his new wife experienced both wedding bliss and medical emergency during their Balinese getaway, with their dream ceremony followed by the premature birth of their first child just days later.
A Tropical Paradise Wedding
The Parramatta Eels forward exchanged vows with his partner in an intimate ceremony surrounded by close family and friends at the luxurious Amarterra Villas Bali. The couple had meticulously planned their special day, choosing the tropical island for its beauty and serenity.
"It was absolutely magical," Matterson revealed about the wedding day. "Everything we could have dreamed of and more. To have our closest family and friends there to celebrate with us made it even more special."
Unexpected Turn of Events
Just when the newlyweds thought their fairytale was complete, life had other plans. Mere days after saying "I do," Matterson's wife went into unexpected early labour, forcing an emergency dash to hospital.
"We went from celebrating our wedding to being in hospital within days," the 29-year-old footballer explained. "It was a whirlwind of emotions - from the highest high to facing genuine concern for both my wife and our unborn child."
Medical Emergency in Foreign Land
The premature birth required immediate medical intervention at a Balinese hospital, presenting the couple with the challenge of navigating healthcare in a foreign country during a critical situation.
Fortunately, both mother and baby emerged healthy from the ordeal, though the experience left the new parents shaken. "It was pretty full-on," Matterson admitted. "But we got through it together, and that's what matters."
Double Celebration
Despite the stressful circumstances, the Matterson family now has double the reason to celebrate - a successful marriage and the safe arrival of their newborn child.
The rugby league community has rallied around the player, with teammates and fans alike sending messages of support for the growing family as they adjust to their new life together.
Matterson concluded: "We're just grateful everyone is healthy and we can begin our journey as a proper family. It wasn't how we imagined starting married life, but it's our story and we cherish every moment."
