NFL fines Buccaneers' Mayfield & Irving £11k+ for 'nose wipe' gesture
NFL fines Buccaneers duo over 'nose wipe' celebration

The National Football League (NFL) has sparked a furious backlash from fans after issuing fines totalling over $20,000 to two Tampa Bay Buccaneers players for a controversial celebration.

What Did Mayfield and Irving Do?

Quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Bucky Irving have been penalised retrospectively for performing the so-called 'nose wipe' gesture during their team's 20-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last week. The celebration, captured on camera, was not flagged by officials during the game itself.

However, the league's front office later took action, slapping Mayfield with a fine of $14,491 and Irving with a penalty of $6,349. The move comes after the NFL explicitly added the 'nose wipe' to its list of prohibited 'violent gestures' before the season began.

Why is the Gesture Banned?

The 'nose wipe' celebration is banned primarily due to its alleged association with street gang culture. NFL vice president Troy Vincent stated earlier this year that the gesture has clear 'gang connotations' and is considered disrespectful.

"If anybody Googled 'nose wipe', you'll see the language that is used and where that's affiliated," Vincent said in April. "I think the players know better. I know they know better."

The league's official rule now bans "any violent gesture," which includes but is not limited to "a throat slash, simulation firing or brandishing a gun, or using the 'nose wipe' gesture." The prescribed punishment is a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Fan Fury and the 'No Fun League'

The decision to fine the players has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media, with supporters accusing the NFL of overreach and inconsistency. Many fans took to platform X to voice their displeasure.

One baffled supporter commented: "I guess I missed the 'violent' part of the gesture here." Another added, "What was the violent part? I thought they could have fun again," echoing a sentiment felt by many.

The old nickname for the NFL, the "No Fun League," was quickly revived by critics. One fan bluntly declared league officials "stupid," while another posted in exasperation: "This is legitimate insanity. How has the NFLPA not MASSIVELY pushed back on this ridiculousness?????"

The gesture was first popularised in the NFL by Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, bringing it into the league's spotlight. The NFL's subsequent crackdown is part of a broader effort, as Vincent explained, to maintain sportsmanship and immediately stop gestures with problematic affiliations. "When you see it, you've got to kill it," he stated.

Despite the league's stance, the financial penalties handed to Mayfield and Irving have clearly struck a nerve with the fanbase, reigniting the perennial debate over the boundaries of player expression and celebration in professional sport.
