Newcastle United's summer transfer policy, which saw the club sign eight first-team players aged 24 and under, has come under scrutiny following back-to-back defeats. The Magpies lost to Coventry and Aston Villa, and questions are being raised about the club's change of direction in the market.
Sporting director Ross Wilson oversaw a summer revolution, with all eight new signings aged 24 or under. In the same window, Newcastle sold key players Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively, while Kieran Trippier left on a free transfer.
Mixed Start Raises Questions
The bold vision, dubbed 'Newcastle United 2.0' by CEO David Hopkinson, has produced a mixed start to the season. In the recent defeat to Aston Villa, only Lukas Hornicek, Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo from the eight summer signings started the game.
Sean Steur and Amar Dedic were among the substitutes, while Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba and Ewen Jaouen are yet to make a Premier League start. The expensive outlay has led to questions over the merits of the transfer policy.
Former Player Weighs In
Former Newcastle player Waddle expressed understanding for supporters' frustration. "The owners obviously needed to turn a profit in the summer and they've done that, but they lost three of their best players in the process," Waddle told Chronicle Live, on behalf of NetBet casino UK.
He also noted that last season's big signings have not worked out: "Last season was a disaster for Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa has been unfortunate with injuries and things just didn't work out for Nick Woltemade for whatever reason. They were three big signings by Eddie Howe and it hasn't happened for any of them."
Looking Ahead
Waddle added: "Jaissle has brought in a number of young players and the club obviously wants to go down the route of signing young players, eventually getting them into the first team and then selling them on for double the money in a few years. It must be frustrating for Newcastle fans."
Newcastle United will look to return to winning ways when they travel to Selhurst Park on Sunday to face Crystal Palace.
