Newcastle United are set to raid Kilmarnock for their goalkeeping coach Fraser Stewart. Killie’s head of goalkeeping is set to join the Magpies’ under-21 set-up. The shock move leaves Kilmarnock boss Neil McCann looking for a replacement.
Stewart joins Newcastle's Scottish contingent
Stewart was headhunted by Newcastle, where he will work under lead coach Robbie Stockdale. The English Premier League side has strong Scottish connections. Ross Wilson is sporting director at Newcastle United, while Jack Ross is an assistant director of football. Stewart is set to boost their Scottish contingent.
The 37-year-old has been in post at Killie for the last four years. He has worked under Derek McInnes, Stuart Kettlewell and now McCann. Stewart has a decent pedigree. He previously worked with the Scottish Football Association where he was the head of goalkeeping for the Scotland under-21s and Women’s teams.
Kilmarnock face search for replacement
He has worked closely with Killie keepers Max Stryjek and Calum Ferrie this season and was instrumental in bringing them both to Ayrshire. Fraser’s brother holds a similar position at Liverpool. Colin Stewart, who was formerly at Rangers, is the goalkeeper development and pathway lead at the Anfield Academy.
Killie boss McCann is currently considering options for his goalkeeping position. Conor Brennan is a possible candidate. The Northern Irishman, who previously played for Killie, is currently the goalkeeping academy coach at Rangers. McCann and his assistant know him from their time together at Rangers, when they worked under interim-boss Barry Ferguson. Brennan also stepped up to the first-team role when Danny Rohl stepped down and before McInnes moved to take Allan McGregor back in.
