Newcastle United will travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday with a much healthier squad, as head coach Matthias Jaissle confirmed Anthony Elanga is back after a month out. Only two players are definitely ruled out, offering a timely boost as the Magpies aim to end a run of two defeats with a morale-boosting away win at Selhurst Park.
Returning players and injury updates
Jaissle provided a positive update on the injury situation in Friday's pre-match press conference. Young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is expected to miss several months with a hamstring injury picked up with the French Under-21 side, while England full-back Tino Livramento is still not ready to return from a knee injury, which added to his summer woes after he was forced to pull out of the World Cup squad.
William Osula, Dan Burn, and Amar Dedic have played minor roles since returning from injury and are expected to be involved at Palace. That leaves three doubts, all of which are in with a chance of featuring.
Elanga and Ramsey boost
Jaissle confirmed winger Anthony Elanga is back in the squad after a month out, a significant boost for the Magpies. Midfielder Jacob Ramsey could also return at Selhurst Park, although Jaissle insisted he would tread carefully with the former Aston Villa man.
"We need to take it step-by-step with him, we don't want to take too many risks," he said. "I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back."
Palace's concerns
The remaining doubt for Newcastle is Belgian forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who missed some training this week due to illness. The 21-year-old does not have an injury issue and is expected to be part of the squad.
Crystal Palace could be without five players, with only goalkeeper Dean Henderson in with a chance of playing on Sunday. He trained this week but did not take part in their Europa League game against Besiktas. Former United target Jorgen Strand Larsen is set to miss the game after picking up an injury in midweek, limping out 20 minutes after coming on in Turkey.
Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is ruled out with a calf problem, as is midfielder Quinten Timber, who faces a spell on the sidelines with a thigh problem. Centre-back Chadi Riad could miss the entire season with a knee injury, with Palace not expecting him to return until 2027 pre-season.
