David Moyes Slams Referees After Controversial Penalty Decides Leeds Clash
Moyes slams refs after Leeds penalty winner

West Ham United manager David Moyes has launched a scathing critique of match officials after a contentious penalty decision cost his side dearly in their Premier League clash against Leeds United.

The Hammers boss didn't mince words when addressing the late spot-kick that sealed Leeds' 2-1 victory at Elland Road on Saturday. "The referees have had a poor weekend," Moyes stated bluntly in his post-match interview.

Controversial Call Decides Tight Encounter

The match appeared headed for a draw until the 87th minute when referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after judging West Ham's Michail Antonio to have handled the ball in the area. Leeds' Patrick Bamford converted the resulting penalty to snatch all three points.

"When you see some of the decisions this weekend, it's hard not to feel aggrieved," Moyes continued. "We're talking about fine margins that change games, and unfortunately those calls went against us today."

VAR Under Scrutiny Again

The Video Assistant Referee system reviewed the incident but upheld Oliver's original decision, leaving West Ham players and staff furious. Replays showed the ball striking Antonio's thigh before brushing his arm in what many considered a natural position.

"The technology is there to help get these decisions right," Moyes added. "When it doesn't correct clear errors, it makes you wonder what purpose it's serving."

Performance Overshadowed by Controversy

The result overshadowed what had been an improved performance from West Ham following their opening day defeat. Jarrod Bowen's first-half equaliser had cancelled out Leeds' early opener before the late drama unfolded.

Moyes refused to blame his players, saying: "The lads gave everything out there today. They deserved more from the game, but sometimes these decisions go against you in football."

The defeat leaves West Ham with zero points from their first two matches, while Leeds move into the top half of the early season table.
