Lionel Messi's return to Inter Miami's lineup was cut short on Wednesday night as he was substituted in the 37th minute due to an apparent leg issue. The 36-year-old had missed the previous two matches—one for club and one for country—citing fatigue, but now an injury appears likely. Jordi Alba also exited early in the 34th minute, compounding Miami's concerns.
Despite losing both stars, Miami secured a 4-0 victory over Toronto, moving within five points of the final MLS Eastern Conference playoff spot. Robert Taylor, who replaced Messi, scored twice and provided an assist. Facundo Farias and Benjamin Cremaschi added the other goals.
Messi showed signs of discomfort after a run into the box in the 33rd minute, then removed his captain's armband and unstrapped his shin guards before leaving the pitch. Coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino said the team will evaluate both players over the coming days but offered no specifics.
Inter Miami now face a grueling schedule of six matches in 17 days, including a US Open Cup final against Houston on 27 September. The team's playoff hopes hinge on Messi's fitness, as they control their destiny: win all remaining games and they will qualify for the postseason.
Messi has been instrumental since joining in July, contributing 11 goals and eight assists in 12 appearances across all competitions, including one goal and two assists in four MLS matches. His absence would be a significant blow to Miami's ambitions.
