Arsenal icon Paul Merson has launched a scathing attack on the Gunners' reported pursuit of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, branding the potential deal as "absolute madness."
Merson Questions Madueke's Credentials
The former England international expressed disbelief at the rumours linking the 22-year-old with a move across London, pointing to Madueke's limited playing time at Stamford Bridge last season.
"He couldn't get in Chelsea's team," Merson told Sportskeeda. "They finished 12th or whatever it was, and he couldn't get in the side. Now he's going to get in Arsenal's team?"
Transfer Strategy Under Scrutiny
The outspoken pundit suggested Arsenal should be targeting established stars rather than players struggling for minutes at rival clubs:
- Madueke made just 12 Premier League starts last term
- The winger contributed only 3 goals and 1 assist
- Arsenal reportedly considering £30m+ bid
"If you're Arsenal, you should be looking at players who are playing every week for top teams," Merson argued. "Not someone who can't get in a team that finished mid-table."
Chelsea's Willingness to Sell
Reports suggest Chelsea may be open to offers for the England U21 international as they look to balance their books following heavy spending. However, Merson believes this should serve as a warning to his former club.
"When a club like Chelsea, with all their problems, are happy to let a young player go, that tells you something," he added.
