McIlroy's Masters Partner: Teen Amateur Howell 'Super Nervous'

Rory McIlroy Discovers Masters Playing Partner Early as Teen Amateur Prepares for Augusta Debut

Rory McIlroy has already learned the identity of one of his playing partners for the opening two rounds at Augusta National, as he prepares to defend his Masters title this week. While official tee times for the prestigious tournament are yet to be confirmed, the reigning champion will begin his title defence on Thursday alongside amateur star Mason Howell and another competitor from the 91-man field.

Teenage Amateur Earns Coveted Spot Alongside Golfing Icon

The 18-year-old Howell, who is the current US Amateur champion, has secured an invitation to three major tournaments through his victory, including the privilege of teeing off alongside the defending Masters champion. Remarkably, Howell has not yet begun his collegiate golf career but will receive passionate support in Augusta after committing to the University of Georgia, where he will start his studies this autumn.

"I'll be super excited, but at the same time I'll be super nervous," Howell admitted on Monday. "I think just controlling my emotions and sticking to my game plan, and just having fun. Rory was one of my idols growing up, so it'll be a super special moment for me. I can't oggle at his game too much. I got to focus on myself. It'll be fun."

Learning from Past Controversies and Current Mentors

Howell will undoubtedly be keen to avoid any controversy during his Masters debut, particularly after last year's incident involving LIV Golf's Josele Ballester, who angered tournament officials by urinating in Rae's Creek while playing alongside then-reigning champion Scottie Scheffler. The young amateur has been able to draw upon the guidance of mentor Harris English, a University of Georgia alumnus who honed his skills at the same club as his protégé.

The pair played a practice round together on Monday, with English offering valuable advice to the nervous teenager. "I've known Mason for a long time now," English said. "I was really excited about his win at the U.S. Amateur. Been pulling on him for a long time and it's awesome to rub off on him I guess a little bit out here."

Managing Expectations at Golf's Most Prestigious Tournament

English, who is competing in his seventh Masters, emphasized the importance of perspective for the young golfer. "I think this is my seventh Masters, so just little stuff that I can help him with. I know his brain is spinning right now. I can't imagine what he's going through at 18 years old and playing in the Masters for the first time."

"So just to have fun. Have a cool experience out here. He's getting to play with Rory for the first couple of rounds. Talked about that some. Just told him, 'Take it all in, but manage your time well. Don't get lost in everything. This is just another golf tournament.'"

A Promising Future from Shared Roots

Reflecting on their shared background at Glen Arven club, English added: "We grew up at the same club, Glen Arven. I remember him as a little kid, eight or nine years old, probably. Had a good crew down there. Got a lot of good young junior golfers down there that are very competitive."

"Another one that's playing at Georgia this year in Mason. It's awesome to see. We had some good players around my era, and it's nice to see the next wave come through. I don't know what is in the water down there, but they're doing some good things at Glen Arven."

As McIlroy prepares to defend his crown and Howell readies himself for the biggest moment of his young career, all eyes will be on this intriguing pairing when they take to the hallowed grounds of Augusta National on Thursday.
