Brian McDermott has been named the new head coach of England's rugby league team, tasked with leading the side to their first-ever World Cup victory later this year. McDermott, the most successful coach in Super League history with eight major trophies at Leeds Rhinos, takes over from Shaun Wane, who stepped down in January.
Selection Process
The appointment was made by a four-person panel that included former England players Kevin Sinfield and Kris Radlinski. McDermott currently serves as an assistant coach for NRL side Gold Coast Titans and will now prepare for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
World Cup Campaign
England will begin their World Cup campaign on 17 October against Tonga, followed by pool stage matches against France and Papua New Guinea. McDermott's experience and success in Super League are expected to bolster England's chances in the tournament.
