Brendon McCullum has pledged to maintain a firm grip on England's off-field conduct after a series of controversies during their winter tours in the southern hemisphere.
England's white-ball captain Harry Brook was involved in a physical altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand and later admitted to lying about the details to shield his teammates. This incident fuelled allegations of a drinking culture within the squad, with Test players seen enjoying lengthy bar sessions in Noosa during the Ashes series.
Speaking for the first time since England reached the T20 World Cup semi-finals in March, head coach McCullum acknowledged the need for corrective measures.
"You're bringing up young men in a high-pressure environment with many distractions," McCullum said. "They are growing up on the world stage under intense scrutiny, and sometimes mistakes happen. As a leader, it is my job to minimise those errors because they are unhelpful. Ideally, they would never occur, but we live in an imperfect world. We will support these players while occasionally applying a firm grip to avoid repeating the same mistakes."
McCullum spoke at England's training base in Loughborough after returning from a break in New Zealand. He defended his decision to take time off following the World Cup, which drew criticism from pundits like former England captain Michael Vaughan, who believed McCullum should have been watching the County Championship.
"I had a well-deserved break after a demanding period," McCullum explained. "When Rob Key offered me the full-time role across white-ball and Test teams, he understood the schedule's demands and my young family. There are times when I need to be at home. I've been on the road for 25 years, so touring is nothing new, but it is vital to recharge for an exciting summer ahead. I watched plenty of County Championship matches. With the current system, information flows from a vast support network behind England's men's side. It's nearly impossible to attend every game when travelling ten months a year. I've kept track of most matches and seen immense talent in English cricket."
McCullum also revealed medical reasons for his return to New Zealand: "I needed a couple of operations that had been scheduled for a long time. It's good to get those sorted."
England's Test summer begins against New Zealand at Lord's on 4 June.
