Rangers icon Ally McCoist has publicly backed Arsenal to make a move for Sporting CP's in-form striker Viktor Gyokeres, describing the Swedish international as a 'brilliant' addition for the Gunners.
The 25-year-old forward has been in sensational form since joining Sporting from Coventry City last summer, netting an impressive 36 goals in just 39 appearances across all competitions.
McCoist's Strong Endorsement
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist didn't hold back in his praise: 'I think he's brilliant. I watched him at Coventry and thought he was excellent, but he's gone to another level in Portugal. He's got everything - strength, pace, finishing ability.'
Why Gyokeres Fits Arsenal's Needs
With Arsenal looking to strengthen their attacking options, Gyokeres represents an intriguing proposition:
- Proven goal-scoring record in multiple leagues
- Physical presence to lead the line
- Experience in English football from his Coventry days
- Entering his prime years at 25
The Transfer Challenge
Sporting are reportedly demanding his €100 million (£86 million) release clause be met, which could test Arsenal's resolve in the summer market. However, with Champions League football likely secured for next season, the Gunners may have the financial muscle to make such a significant investment.
McCoist added: 'If Arsenal are serious about challenging for the title again next season, they need someone like Gyokeres. He could be the difference-maker in those tight games.'
Alternative Options
While Gyokeres appears to be a prime target, Arsenal are also reportedly monitoring other strikers including:
- Ivan Toney (Brentford)
- Victor Osimhen (Napoli)
- Alexander Isak (Newcastle)
The summer transfer window promises to be an interesting one for Mikel Arteta's side as they look to build on their recent progress.
