Manchester United's trip to Brentford on Saturday is set to be charged with tension after the summer transfer saga surrounding Bryan Mbeumo. The forward, who moved to Old Trafford for a fee of £65 million potentially rising to £71 million with add-ons, returns to his former club for the first time since the contentious deal was finalised on July 21.
United officials have accused Brentford of inflating Mbeumo's price and pressuring him to reduce his wage demands in order to secure a larger transfer fee. They also alleged that the Bees attempted to persuade the Cameroon international to join Tottenham or Newcastle instead. However, Mbeumo, a lifelong United supporter, insisted on moving only to Old Trafford, leading United to make three bids before finally securing his signature.
Despite the off-field friction, Mbeumo is expected to receive a warm welcome from Brentford fans when he steps onto the pitch at the Gtech Community Stadium. However, the atmosphere between the two clubs' officials may be less cordial, with United expressing disappointment over what they perceived as underhand negotiation tactics.
United have historically struggled at Brentford's home ground since the Bees returned to the Premier League in 2021. After a 3-1 win under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat in Erik ten Hag's second match in charge, prompting a gruelling 14km training run the following day. In Ten Hag's next visit, a last-gasp Mason Mount goal was cancelled out by a 99th-minute Brentford equaliser, ending 1-1.
New United boss Ruben Amorim experienced a narrow 4-3 defeat on his first trip to Brentford in May. He will be eager to secure back-to-back league victories for the first time since taking over, following last Saturday's hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea.
