Javier Mascherano has stepped down as Inter Miami manager for personal reasons, the club announced, just months after leading the team to their first MLS Cup victory.
The Argentine, who arrived ahead of the 2025 season with only youth national team experience, guided Inter Miami to the title with former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. However, the club's title defence has been patchy, with three wins from five league matches but a disappointing exit from the Concacaf Champions Cup to Nashville SC in the last 16.
Sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will take over as interim head coach. Mascherano's entire coaching staff will also leave the club.
In a statement, Mascherano thanked the club, employees and players, saying he would 'always carry the memory of our first star'. He noted that the club has undergone significant roster changes since last season, with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba retiring, and Luis Suárez relegated to the bench after the signing of Germán Berterame, who has started slowly.
