Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez has said he is “focused on my recovery” after being booked and released from jail following a stabbing incident in Indiana. The 38-year-old was processed at Marion County Jail on Sunday after his release from hospital, as ordered by a judge before he could leave the state.
Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Sanchez thanked first responders and the surgeon who operated on him, saying “she saved my life … I’m grateful for that”. He described his recovery as “slow” and a “long process”. Sanchez faces a felony battery charge after a confrontation with 69-year-old truck driver Perry Tole in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police said the dispute began over a parking space.
Tole, who suffered a deep facial laceration, said he feared for his life and used pepper spray and a knife on Sanchez. Tole has filed a lawsuit against Sanchez, citing “severe permanent disfigurement” and emotional distress. Sanchez has pleaded not guilty to charges including battery with injury, public intoxication and unlawful entry of a vehicle. If convicted, he could face up to six years in prison. A court hearing is scheduled for 5 November.
Sanchez, a former New York Jets first-round draft pick, was in Indianapolis to cover the Colts-Raiders game for Fox Sports. The broadcaster has not commented on his future with the network.
