Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has firmly dismissed recent speculation linking him with the managerial position at Manchester City, branding the reports as '100 per cent speculation'.
Maresca Addresses the Rumours
The Italian coach was responding to claims published on Thursday, 19 December 2025, which suggested he was on a shortlist of candidates to potentially succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola's future has been the subject of conjecture, with reports indicating he could depart at the season's end.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea's Premier League trip to face Newcastle United on Saturday, Maresca was unequivocal in his response. 'It doesn't affect me,' he stated. 'It's 100 per cent speculation. There is no time for this kind of thing. I have a contract here until 2029. My focus is just about this club. I'm very proud to be here.'
A Pattern of Speculation
Maresca pointed out that this is not the first time his name has been connected with other clubs, noting similar links with Juventus just a week prior. He emphasised his policy of ignoring such talk, stating, 'I don't pay attention because I know it's not true.'
The 45-year-old has strong historical ties to Manchester City, having previously served as their Under-23s coach and later as an assistant to Guardiola, whom he considers a mentor. He left the club in 2023 to take the helm at Leicester City before his move to Stamford Bridge.
Commitment to Chelsea Amid Internal Tensions
This latest round of rumours comes shortly after Maresca declined to clarify comments that appeared to criticise a perceived lack of support from the Chelsea hierarchy. That stance had itself fueled speculation about deteriorating internal relations at the club.
When directly asked if he could promise to be in charge at Chelsea next season, Maresca was adamant. 'Absolutely, yes,' he affirmed. 'I have a contract until 2029. This is speculation, 100 per cent. I don't have nothing to add. I'm just focused on Newcastle and on my job.'
His clear rebuttal is aimed at quelling the mounting gossip and ensuring all focus remains on Chelsea's immediate challenge in the Premier League, as they prepare for a tough away fixture at St. James' Park.
