Manchester United's defensive crisis has deepened after Leny Yoro was ruled out of tonight's match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old had been expected to start as the senior centre-back due to suspensions for Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.
Yoro was not spotted with the travelling squad on Friday, prompting fears over his availability, which were confirmed when he was omitted from the matchday squad named by head coach Michael Carrick. It remains unclear whether he will be fit for the next fixture against Brentford in over a week's time.
Speaking about Yoro's absence, Carrick said: 'Hopefully it's only a small issue, but he's obviously not ready for tonight. It's part of football. We've got a pretty good squad in terms of injuries really. There's Leny, there's Matthijs, who's out for a bit longer, and there's Patrick. It's the two suspensions so all of a sudden there's less options at centre-back. We can adapt and we can make the most of it.'
In Yoro's place, Carrick is expected to field Luke Shaw alongside young defender Ayden Heaven, though Noussair Mazraoui could also feature in central defence. There was some positive news: Kobbie Mainoo has recovered from a minor knock and is available to reclaim his spot from Manuel Ugarte in midfield.
