Manchester United are navigating three release clauses in Ruben Amorim's contract as they seek to appoint the Sporting Lisbon boss as their next manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday.
The Red Devils dismissed Ten Hag after a dismal start to the season, with just four wins in all competitions leaving them 14th in the Premier League. Amorim has emerged as the preferred candidate, having won two Primeira Liga titles and two Taca da Liga trophies during his four-year tenure.
According to reports in Portugal, Amorim's deal contains tiered release clauses. Portuguese clubs would need to pay £25m, foreign clubs £17m, and elite European sides—dubbed the 'sharks'—just £8.4m. United are negotiating whether they qualify for the lower fee given their current Europa League status.
Amorim declined to discuss the speculation on Monday, stating: 'I am very proud to be Sporting coach, that's all.' United have not confirmed their next appointment, instead announcing Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim head coach while they search for a permanent successor.
