Manchester United defender Millie Turner has publicly criticised sportswear giant Adidas after the company mistakenly labelled her as former teammate Amy Turner in a promotional image for the new United kit. Turner, who has been an Adidas athlete for two years, took to social media to express her frustration.
In a tweet that has since gone viral, the 25-year-old wrote: 'Considering I’ve been at Manchester United for 3 years and an adidas athlete for 2… You’d like to think adidas would get my name right.' The error comes amid a period of significant change for United's women's side, with several key players and manager Casey Stoney departing.
Former United player Jess Sigsworth backed Turner, tweeting: 'Outstanding player, outstanding person and they still can’t get her name right. That would only happen to female players #MustDoBetter.' Amy Turner, the player Adidas confused Millie with, also mocked the company, writing: 'NeVeR FoRgEt WhErE yOu CaMe FrOm' We must do better!'
The incident has sparked wider criticism of how major brands treat female athletes. Blackburn Rovers star Natasha Fenton commented: 'It’s like big brands are just going through the motions to ‘support’ and ‘promote’ female athletes. It comes across as if they are doing it just because society says so. Shame on you adidas.'
Meanwhile, United's women's team remains without a manager since Stoney's departure in May, and reports suggest players are considering approaching the Professional Footballers’ Association over concerns about the club's direction. The WSL season is set to begin on September 3.
