Manchester United are nearing the signing of Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens for a fee of around €20 million (£17m). The 23-year-old Belgium Under-21s international is expected to compete with André Onana for the number-one spot at Old Trafford.
Onana's position has come under scrutiny following a series of unconvincing performances since his £44.4m move from Inter in July 2023. He was omitted from the squad for the opening-day defeat to Arsenal, and his replacement Altay Bayindir made an error that led to the winning goal. Onana, who has been made aware that United have rejected inquiries from other clubs, is likely to miss part of the season due to Cameroon's Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.
The 6ft 3in Lammens made his senior debut for Club Brugge in July 2021 and moved to Antwerp two years later, making his first appearance in a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Porto in November 2023. While sources in Belgium suggest United have agreed personal terms, it is understood that is not yet the case.
Meanwhile, manager Ruben Amorim has stated it is “not a good thing” to have four first-team players training away from the squad as they seek moves. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia have been working separately since pre-season and were not included in the squad for the opening defeat to Arsenal. They will also miss the trip to Fulham. Amorim said he hopes to arrange departures for the quartet before the transfer window closes on 1 September, but if not, he is open to reintegrating them.
United are yet to sell a player for a fee this summer; the only senior departure has been Marcus Rashford, who joined Barcelona on a season-long loan with the Catalan club covering his wages. Benjamin Sesko is likely to start up front at Craven Cottage after coming off the bench on his debut against Arsenal.
