Manchester United have recalled striker Ethan Wheatley from his loan spell at League One side Northampton Town, with the club expected to appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager this week. The 19-year-old made 25 appearances for the Cobblers, scoring three goals and providing four assists, before a recent injury ruled him out of the last two league games.
BBC Sport reports interest from other clubs, but Wheatley's move may be delayed due to a knock sustained against Huddersfield in late December. Northampton head coach Kevin Nolan expressed disappointment at the recall but pride in Wheatley's development, saying: 'We are disappointed Ethan has been recalled but we are proud of the work we have done with him and believe he leaves us a far better player than he arrived.'
Wheatley thanked the club, staff and supporters, adding: 'I have loved my time at Northampton Town. I'm very grateful to the manager and the staff who put their trust in me... I wish the club and everyone connected with it all the very best for the future.'
United are expected to name a caretaker manager until the end of the season, with Michael Carrick edging ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after direct talks with both. The Guardian reports that some senior squad members expressed reservations about a Solskjaer return. Darren Fletcher, who took charge of the last two matches following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, said: 'I have to report tomorrow morning to Carrington, that is all I know. I will find out tomorrow morning.'
Whoever takes over will face a tough start, with the Manchester derby followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal. On the positive side, Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo will be available after their respective AFCON exits, while Noussair Mazraoui's Morocco remain in the tournament.
