Manchester United have officially confirmed the permanent departure of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli for a fee of £38 million. The Danish striker, who joined United from Atalanta in 2023 for £72 million, struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, scoring just 14 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions. His underwhelming performances earned him the unflattering nickname 'Rasmiss' among some sections of the United fanbase.
Loan spell and permanent move
Hojlund spent the 2025/26 season on loan with Napoli, where he rediscovered his form under manager Antonio Conte. He scored 16 goals in 44 appearances, helping the club win the Supercoppa Italiana and finish as runners-up in Serie A. The Italian giants activated the option to make the move permanent, a deal that was agreed between the clubs back in January.
The 23-year-old had no desire to return to Manchester and is said to be delighted that his long-term future is now resolved. United, meanwhile, had already invested £66.3 million in forward Benjamin Sesko last summer to address their attacking needs.
Club statement
A statement on Manchester United's official website read: "Rasmus Hojlund has joined Napoli on a permanent transfer. The Denmark international spent last season on loan at the Italian club, scoring 16 times in 44 games across all competitions, and has now permanently joined the Neapolitans."
"The boyhood United fan signed from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 and went on to score 26 goals in 95 appearances. He was part of the Reds squad that lifted the Emirates FA Cup in May 2024, having come on as a substitute against Manchester City at Wembley."
"At the start of the 2025/26 season, Hojlund returned to Italy on a season-long loan, helping Napoli to win the Supercoppa Italiana and finish runners-up in Serie A. Everyone at the club would like to wish Rasmus all the very best for the future."
Career at United
Hojlund joined United from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 but failed to live up to his hefty price tag. Despite scoring 26 goals in 95 appearances for the club, his form was inconsistent, and he became a figure of fun for some fans. His move to Napoli has allowed him to revive his career, and he is now settled on the Amalfi Coast.
