Ruben Amorim expressed his anger and frustration after Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United at Old Trafford. Soungoutou Magassa’s 83rd-minute equaliser denied Amorim’s side what would have been a fifth win in eight games, leaving the Portuguese manager visibly upset.
United had taken the lead through Diogo Dalot, but a lapse in concentration allowed West Ham to level. Andy Irving’s corner was flicked on by Jarrod Bowen, and after Noussair Mazraoui cleared off the line, the ball fell to Magassa, who drove home his first goal for the Hammers. Amorim criticised his team’s defending, saying: “We have a long ball, we have everything under control, we need to do better.”
The draw leaves United in sixth place with 22 points, while West Ham remain in the relegation zone with 12 points. Despite the setback, Amorim refused to blame his players, stating he would speak to them the following day. “I am almost always consistent,” he said when asked if he had given a dressing-room rollicking.
United had chances to extend their lead before the equaliser, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both causing problems. However, a failure to capitalise proved costly, as West Ham snatched a point late on. Amorim admitted his side’s inconsistency is a concern, but remained focused on the next match.
