Michael Carrick has confirmed that Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid. The Red Devils visit the Estadio Metropolitano in their first away game in Europe's top competition for three years, but two of Carrick's first-choice players will not be part of the squad.
Injury concerns ahead of Atletico clash
United made a winning return to the Champions League with a 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford, but the level of opposition rises significantly against Diego Simeone's Atletico. Concerns grew when Shaw and Mainoo were absent from open training before the fixture, and Carrick has now confirmed the worst.
“They've not travelled, both picked up issues in the game at the weekend so they're out,” the United boss said.
Left-back dilemma for Carrick
The absence leaves United with a problem at left-back, as natural replacement Patrick Dorgu is sidelined with a hamstring problem picked up on international duty with Denmark. Noussair Mazraoui, who has also featured on the left of defence, is an injury doubt after returning from Morocco's camp with a knock that kept him out of the 1-1 draw with Tottenham.
Diogo Dalot remains the other option, having played in that position on several occasions for United. It could also mean another start for Leny Yoro at right-back, after the Frenchman was preferred to Dalot against Spurs.
