United are not considering a permanent sale but would prefer Mainoo to join a club abroad rather than another Premier League side. This situation echoes past decisions that saw Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund leave Old Trafford and thrive in Italy, with Hojlund currently scoring four goals in eight games for Napoli and McTominay named Serie A MVP last season.
Meanwhile, forward Benjamin Sesko has been backed to improve after a slow start. The summer signing from RB Leipzig has scored only twice in 11 appearances, with Gary Neville criticising his recent display against Nottingham Forest. However, Gary Lineker believes Sesko is promising and that United's recruitment looks better than in previous years, pointing to the impact of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Former England boss Gareth Southgate has also commented on his future after being linked with the United job earlier this season. Southgate, who led England to two European Championship finals, said he is not desperate to return to management and has other interests after 37 years in football.
