Kyle Walker has claimed that the absence of several key players, not individual failures, was the main reason for Manchester City's decline in his final season at the club. The 35-year-old, who captained City to four consecutive Premier League titles, believes his role as skipper made him a convenient scapegoat during a difficult campaign.
Speaking about City's failure to retain their crown in the 2024-25 season, Walker insisted that a number of 'big' absentees were behind the slump. 'I felt just like I was getting… not blamed. I won't say blamed but I felt I was the excuse because I was the captain,' he told The Telegraph. He also highlighted that despite losing 2-0 to Aston Villa on the final day of the 2022 season, fans stayed, showing true support.
Walker joined AC Milan on loan in January before sealing a permanent £5million move to Burnley in the summer. During his time at City, the England international won six league titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League. However, he fell out of favour after a run of poor form, with the team ultimately finishing behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
Now at Burnley, Walker is focused on survival in the Premier League. 'If we can do well and stay in the Premier League, then that's like a title to me,' he said. The defender brings vast experience to Scott Parker's side, who are tipped for promotion after winning the Championship last season. Walker added that he wants to set high standards and help the club achieve more than just avoiding relegation.
