Manchester City Miss Out on Silva's Tipped Successor

Manchester City have already missed the opportunity to sign the £44 million star that Bernardo Silva once predicted would take his place. This development comes as the Portuguese midfielder's departure from the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season has been confirmed.

Silva's Imminent Departure Confirmed

Following months of speculation, assistant manager Pep Lijnders addressed Silva's exit while handling media duties for Pep Guardiola after City's FA Cup victory over Liverpool. Lijnders acknowledged the 31-year-old's impending farewell, stating, "Every good story comes to an end and I hope he enjoys the last months – because there is only six weeks – and has a good farewell. He deserves all the attention as well."

Silva, who has been instrumental in City's success with six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph, leaves a significant void. His 450 appearances since joining from Monaco in 2017 have cemented his status as a unique talent.

The One That Got Away: Geovany Quenda

One potential successor identified by Silva himself was Geovany Quenda, an 18-year-old midfielder. Silva previously praised Quenda, who began his career at Benfica before moving to Sporting CP, saying, "He will probably steal my place. At 17, I wasn't even playing for Benfica's youth team."

However, City have missed out on Quenda, as the teenager has agreed to join Chelsea for approximately £44 million. The deal was finalized in March last year, with Quenda set to link up with the Blues this summer after an impressive final season at Sporting.

Quenda's Rising Profile

Quenda has shone in the Primeira Liga and Champions League, earning plaudits from former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who coached him at Sporting. Amorim described Quenda as a "very talented kid" who is "very physically robust, very focused, with his feet firmly on the ground."

He added, "He got his chance and there was no chance to take it away, no doubt, nothing. I think he's going to be a great player, but let's give it time."

The Challenge of Replacing Silva

Lijnders emphasized the difficulty of filling Silva's shoes, noting, "You never replace a player [like him] with the same kind of player because they don’t exist. Bernardo Silva is unique, the way he controls games, moves, receives, leads and sees the solutions."

He further highlighted Silva's impact, saying, "It will be hard because when he is not playing in a game you see how he is missed. That is one game, imagine the seasons."

As Silva aims to depart on a high note, City continue to chase Arsenal in the Premier League and prepare for an FA Cup semi-final against Southampton. Having already secured the Carabao Cup this season, Silva's legacy at the club remains firmly intact, but his predicted successor will now be plying his trade at Stamford Bridge instead.
