Harry Maguire Reflects on Manchester United's Demanding Environment
Harry Maguire has opened up about the immense pressures of playing for Manchester United, suggesting that the club's intense spotlight has left some former teammates 'broken'. The defender, who recently signed a new one-year contract with an option for an additional season, believes his resilience has been key to surviving the highs and lows at Old Trafford.
A Career of Ups and Downs
Maguire's journey at Manchester United began in 2019 when the club paid a then world-record fee of £80 million to secure his transfer from Leicester City. Since then, he has made 266 appearances, contributing to FA Cup and Carabao Cup victories. However, his time has not been without challenges. Appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær in 2020, Maguire faced a downturn in form as Solskjær's tenure unravelled, eventually losing his starting position under Erik ten Hag and the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes.
In the summer of 2023, he appeared set to leave for West Ham, but a turnaround in form under interim manager Michael Carrick has seen him regain a key role in the squad. Maguire attributes his ability to overcome these obstacles to a laidback attitude and ignoring external criticism.
The Scrutiny That Breaks Players
Maguire highlighted the unique demands of playing for Manchester United, stating that many players find the environment overwhelming. 'I see a lot of players come into this club and quite frankly it's just too big for them,' he said. 'The eyes on you, the scrutiny, the analysis. Every goal that goes in, it's someone's fault. There's going to be ex-players speaking about it. That's just part and parcel of playing for this club.'
When asked if his experiences would have broken lesser players, Maguire responded affirmatively. 'Probably. I think there'll be a lot who want to maybe just close the book and just go elsewhere and restart their career. I think it's probably broken them a little bit earlier.' He described reaching a low point where the mocking and abuse he faced left him with only one direction to go: upwards.
Confidence in His Abilities and Future
Despite the challenges, Maguire remains confident in his skills, describing himself as 'arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes'. He believes this makes him effective in crucial moments, whether defending a lead or chasing a game. His recent performances have helped Manchester United climb to third place, putting them back in contention for Champions League football.
Looking ahead, Maguire is optimistic about the club's future. 'Next season you look at it and I think we've got to be in the bracket where if we get the recruitment right and everything's positive from now to the end of the season and we keep going on the curve, there's no ceiling to where we can reach. We've got to be in the conversation to go and win the big trophies.'
England Ambitions and World Cup Hopes
On the international stage, Maguire is eager to secure a spot in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming World Cup. After earning a recall last month, his first in 18 months, he acknowledges the competition but remains determined. 'I'm desperate to go, whatever role the manager would want me for, whether that's starting or whether it's deciding games late on,' he said.
He backs himself to contribute significantly, emphasizing his defensive prowess and experience. Maguire's journey serves as a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity, as he continues to strive for success both at club and country levels.
