Luis Enrique Dismisses Manchester United Speculation with Laughter
Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has responded to rumours linking him with the Manchester United managerial vacancy by laughing off the suggestion, while strongly indicating his commitment to remain with the French giants. The Spanish manager, whose contract with PSG runs until 2027, was questioned about a potential move to Old Trafford during a recent encounter with supporters.
Supporter Interaction Reveals Manager's Stance
In footage circulating online, Enrique pulled over his vehicle to sign autographs when one fan declared: "I hope you stay with PSG for a long time." The manager's immediate response was revealing as he replied: "Me too." When the same supporter then raised the possibility of a move to Manchester United, asking "Not at United though?" Enrique simply laughed off the notion without further comment.
This exchange suggests the 55-year-old former Barcelona manager intends to honour his current contract with PSG, where he has been in charge since 2024. Recent reports indicate that while he hasn't yet signed a new agreement, contract renewal discussions are among the French club's main priorities for the coming months.
Manchester United's Managerial Situation
Manchester United find themselves in a transitional period following Ruben Amorim's departure in January. Michael Carrick has taken interim charge at Old Trafford with impressive results, securing seven victories in his opening nine fixtures this campaign and transforming United into genuine top-four contenders.
Despite Carrick's success, he isn't assured of remaining in the position beyond the current season. His contract runs only until summer 2026, when the club plans to appoint a permanent head coach. Enrique has been among numerous reported candidates on United's shortlist, but his recent comments suggest he may not be available for the role.
Former Players Back Carrick for Permanent Role
Interestingly, two former Premier League stars have expressed their preference for Carrick to remain in charge at United rather than pursuing Enrique. Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris and former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott debated the United managerial situation last month, reaching a clear consensus in favour of the interim boss.
Speaking on the In The Mixer podcast, Morris stated: "I have a lot of time for Michael Carrick. He was on my Pro Licence course and I've been on a few League Managers' Association things with him. He's an astute student of the game. Straight away, he comes in and Kobbie Mainoo's in there and he's been brilliant. It would be criminal not to give him the job if he carries on."
When asked whether he'd choose Enrique over Carrick if both were available in summer, Morris responded: "I'd still go with Carrick, because I honestly don't think Enrique would come to United."
Lescott concurred, adding: "I don't know if Enrique goes there because I don't think he sees them as genuine contenders. I think Carrick should get the job because I don't know if Enrique will help them become contenders. I think Carrick definitely does that. He has a stronger connection to the club, the fans, everything to help them get to that stage."
The situation leaves Manchester United with an interesting decision to make as they approach the summer transfer window. While Enrique represents an experienced, trophy-winning manager with Champions League pedigree, Carrick has demonstrated an impressive understanding of the club's culture and has achieved immediate results with the current squad.
For now, Enrique's laughter at the United question and his clear affirmation of wanting to stay at PSG suggests the French champions may have successfully secured their manager's commitment for the foreseeable future, leaving United to consider alternative options or potentially rewarding Carrick's impressive interim tenure with a permanent appointment.
