Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a serious calf injury during the win over Manchester City. The Portuguese international was stretchered off in stoppage time at Anfield, and scans have confirmed the severity of the issue.
Jota expressed his disappointment on Twitter, writing: 'After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way. In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible. You'll Never Walk Alone.'
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed the news, stating: 'Not good news, about Diogo, he will miss the World Cup, pretty serious injury in the calf muscle. Very sad news for the boy, for us, for Portugal, for everybody.' Klopp added that Jota will be out for 'months'.
Jota's injury adds to Liverpool's growing list of absentees, including Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Arthur Melo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, and Naby Keita. Trent Alexander-Arnold returned from injury to feature as a substitute against City.
