Rio Ngumoha is set to feature in Sunday's Merseyside derby against Everton as the 17-year-old continues to impress for Liverpool. The winger, signed from Chelsea for £2.8 million in September 2024, has scored two goals this season, including a stunning curler against Fulham and a dramatic winner at Newcastle United.
Former Chelsea youth coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst, who worked with Ngumoha at under-9s level, says he is not surprised by the teenager's emergence. 'Unbelievable ability to move with the ball, break lines, beat players – just electric,' Isaksson-Hurst told the Liverpool Echo. 'A real box office player.'
Isaksson-Hurst recalled a tournament in France where Ngumoha won player of the tournament despite his team not winning. 'He was that good, even though we didn't win, that they still gave him player of the tournament. Standing out amongst the best clubs in Europe – that says it all.'
The coach, who has worked with stars like Jamal Musiala and Noni Madueke, rates Ngumoha among the best he has seen. 'He's got the potential to do everything in the game,' Isaksson-Hurst added. 'Right up near the top.'
Ngumoha's form has been a bright spot in a difficult season for Liverpool, who are battling for a top-five spot to secure Champions League football. Manager Arne Slot has been cautious with the youngster, but his performances are becoming too good to ignore.
